Detail: When I star driving the car it will accelerate excesively and not shift. When it does shift it is harsh and the check engine light turns on. Hyundai elantra 2001, automatic, 94k miles
Solution: When my 2001 Elantra GLS did this at about 100,000 miles Hyundai told me I needed a whole new transmission (costing $5,000). When I took the car to a transmission specialist he found two problems. One was a pinched wire in the transmission harness and the other was the solenoid pack in the transmission. All in all it took him about a half a day to fix and cost about $400. Also the transmission fluid needs to be changed often in these cars because there is not a filter like on most. Check the fluid and see if it is dark and smells burnt. If it does just changing the fluid might solve this issue. I hope this helps and good luck! , NEED check engine light code. just shooting in the dark, but it could be your throttle position sensor or the gear indicator (some times called neutral safety switch). to try and reset it (works on some models) when its doing this (giving you grief). pull over to the side of the road when safe and shut off the car (put in park) then press the accelerator all the way to the floor for 30 seconds. then start the car (take foot off of accelerator first) might cure the problem. engine error code would be most helpfull , Hi, a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
